Did some cleaning today. Moved a few things around and wiped everything down. It really needed it, my desk was covered in all sorts of things and lots of dust… I also emptied out a LOT of unused electronics boxes that have piled up over the years to make room for more Anime Figures that I know I will end up with from Youmacon next month.

Another year has passed and so another Youmacon has come and gone. This one, for me, has been one of the best ones yet despite some of the problems. The cosplays this year were amazing and the sheer amount of things to do was jaw dropping. The lines were the longest I have ever seen and took upwards of 3 hours to get through registration. So much to do in so little time. I spent the majority of the con in 3 places: Dealers room, Game room, and wandering around the Winter Garden. I only went to a few panels which include: Team Four Star 18+, AMV free play, My Little Pony: Friendship is music videos, and the terrible AMV wars Hentai Edition 18+. I also wondered into the Crunchyroll Video room at 430am Sunday Morning to watch Natsuyuki Rendezvous and Saint Seiya: Lost Canvas to charge my phone and fall in and out of sleep for 3 hours. My phone actually took the full 3 hours to charge from 3% battery… Here is a breakdown of the con into what I see as the big things.
The cosplays this year were amazing. I took so many pictures at the many photo shoots that happened throughout the con. It was also a nice change seeing nearly everyone in some form of costume after going to Connecticon over the summer where not as many wore a costume of some sort. I really cant think of a ‘best’ cosplay as much as I can think of a ‘Cutest’ cosplay which is what I chose as the image for this. She is so adorable that I went far out of the way to get a picture of her in front of her artists stall. These Artists are the greatest and do an amazing job. For the rest of the cosplays, see my uploaded images on my facebook page, here and here. I hope that next year will be even better!
Panels / Events:
The panels this year were not all that interesting as it seemed a lot of them were just talk-a-thons rather than funny. That said, there were a few golden ones such as those put on by Team Four Star and the University of Michigan – Dearborn Gaming club. The Team Four Star panel by far had to be the best one out there, especially for those who were able to see the 18+ version where they debut Episode 3 of Hellsing Ultimate Abridged. They also read the sex scene of 50 shades of gray (gay) in their VA voices. The only other thing that really stands out is the VAT room and their AMVs which you can never have to much AMV goodness. Cudos to Nat-chan and the gang keeping us entertained when we need a foot rest.
As for the usual Rave / Dance on Saturday night, it didn’t quite seem the same as the year before. It seemed that they had less in the way of equipment but it was still nonetheless very well put on by the Youmacon staff. Featuring the typical BOOM BOOM music, Youmacon 2012 was the loudest thing yet. The speakers were small compared to last years, but they certainly packed a punch. After leaving the room and heading downstairs, I could still feel the ground shaking from 3 stories down. Impressive I must say.
The Dealers room and Artist Alley formed into one area this year inside Cobo hall. Upon entering I was flabbergasted at how big the room was. Compared to last year, the new room was at least triple in size compared to the Artist Alley plus Dealers room from last year. There was so much to look at, it took nearly 2 hours to browse each stall. I ended up buying more than I ever imagined I would at a con. I was so glad that ever since July I had been saving up money and ended up spending a whopping near $700 (including ticket, cosplay, food, gas, ect.) on Youmacon 2012. I walked out with 9 new shirts, 2 keychains (ika Musume and Eclair from dog days), over a dozen buttons (13 pack of Skyrim buttons), a Strike Witches bag, and a Tachibana Kanade Figurine. I would also like to say thanks to Funimation for giving out free posters this year and I now have 5 awesome posters in my room from Hidan no Aria, Robotics; Notes, Hellsing, Strike Witches, and a Serial Experiements Lain. I wish I had more money since there was so much that I would have liked to buy. Appologies on the blurry picture, my camera was in derp mode 9000.
Game Room / Table Top Gaming:
This year, Youmacon featured a massive Gaming room, as well as a large Table Top gaming room. The Gaming room consisted of many favorites including League of Legends, Diablo III, and many more very popular PC games. Also found were multiple Xbox systems with Call of Duty games and the such. However, the best thing in my opinion were the good classical game systems. N64, NES, Arcade games, Pinball, and much more were here! I spent a large amount of time here just playing and trying out new games. I mostly played Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Melee. The Table Top gaming room featured many favorites and was heavy focused on Magic the Gathering. Some day I should probably actually try it out… but card games of the such don’t seem to be my thing.
The main events this year consisted of the usual Masquerade, Dances, and the big names. Due to scheduling problems this year, a lot of events had many problems starting on time. This was evident from the first day when the Opening Ceremonies started nearly 45 minutes late, pushing all other panels off their rockers. To top it all off, due to miscommunication between the printing company and Youmacon staff, it took until Friday at around 4pm to actually get our scheduling books, which were amazingly done by the way. Organization of the events wasn’t as good as it was last year, but I guess having Cobo Hall added into the mix made it difficult for them to keep everything under control as it was a new thing to be doing.
The staff this year was as great as always. Friendly and helpful, despite all the problems they had to deal with on the terrible scheduling. Security was very good and I am guessing that Detroit had put most of it’s Police force around the downtown area for the weekend to make sure nothing went wrong. This was the first time I stayed the entire night on Saturday night and I have to say it was one of the best things ever.
This year, again, was probably one of the better years at least in my opinion. There was so much to do, so many people to see and talk to. I even got to meet someone who came all the way to Detroit, for business, and stopped by Youmacon from Brazil of all places! It is amazing where some people come from just to visit what started out as a small convention many years ago.
Looking forward, my next convention probably wont be until April-ish range. I plan on trying to make it JAFAX and Anime Central as well as a few other in area small cons. Hopefully I can find some people to go with! With that said, I am going to try and use the site again, wish me luck~
